Tea Farm

All herbs come from the wild mountain meadows of the Rhodope Mountains. This terroir is world-renowned as the home of the legendary Mursalski mountain tea, also included in this blend. The meadow herbs are grown naturally without the use of pesticides and are in part even gathered wild from the mountains. After harvesting, the herbs are gently dried in the shade and processed further by a small, locally based family-run business.

Character & Aroma

Tasting Notes

The high altitude, pristine natural setting, unique climate, fertile soils, native seed varieties, and the untouched growth of the plants all contributes to the tea's rich aroma and flavour. Only the juiciest stems, umbels, and leaves are hand-picked at the height of their bloom, ensuring the highest quality. The tea is harmoniously balanced and velvety-smooth, with a hint of honeyed sweetness. A slightly minty-fresh note adds a certain twist, complementing the Mediterranean-herbal character of this blend.

Mountain Tea (Sideritis)

Mountain tea (Sideritis) is native to the mountain regions of the Balkan Peninsula, including Bulgaria, Greece, and Albania. For centuries, local shepherds have enjoyed this tea while tending their flocks in the highlands. The plant’s flavour and beneficial properties can vary depending on the mountain, soil, and altitude where it grows. On the island of Crete, the most common variety is Sideritis syriaca. A member of the mint family (Lamiaceae), this hardy herb thrives in rocky, mountainous terrain at elevations between 800 and 2000 metres. For premium-quality mountain tea, only the tender upper stems and blossoms are carefully handpicked and gently air-dried.
Like the mountain tea, the other herbs in this high-quality tea blend (oregano, St John's wort, linden blossom and raspberry leaves) also come from the Rhodopes terroir.

About Yoshi En.

Cultivation & Processing

The foundation of this premium mountain tea blend is the well-known mountain tea Sideritis scardica. It is endemic to the mountains of the Balkan Peninsula (Bulgaria, Greece, Albania). Depending on the terroir, mountain range, and altitude, the plant develops different active compounds and aromas. The most famous mountain tea of Bulgaria, Mursalski Trigradski Tea, comes from the Rhodope Mountains above the mountain villages of Trigrad (population 640) and Muğla, in the Mursalitsa region, located in the far south of Bulgaria directly on the border with Greece. In Bulgaria, the plant is listed on the Red List of endangered species and may only be harvested under strict regulations.

Our original Mursalski Trigradski Tea grows in its natural habitat in a prime location, as do the other herbs in this exceptionally fine mountain tea blend. For St John's Wort, linden blossoms, and raspberry leaves, seeds from native wild herbs in the surrounding mountain meadows are sown. They then grow naturally without further cultivation, influenced only by the idyllic beauty of nature. In the case of oregano, it is even collected wild, gently picked by hand in the open countryside by family members of the producer.

After the harvesting from June to August, the plants are gently air-dried via hanging in the shade and then packaged for us. It doesn’t get more natural or of higher quality than this.

Single Origin

This tea comes 100% from the above-mentioned mountain meadows above Trigrad, sourced directly from the producer.

Preparation

Chop up a handful of stems and leaves per 300 ml water, infuse for 5-10 minutes.

Packaging & Storage

Packed in a particularly high-quality, airtight flavour-protecting bag with zipper and stand-up base. When closing the bag, press out as much air as possible before snapping shut. Alternatively, we recommend storing the tea in an internally coated, airtight tea caddy.

Recommended Tea Pot

Ideal is a spacious teapot made of glass or porcelain with an integrated tea strainer.

Test results

We find it very important that our teas are pure and produced in a way that respects the environment. For this reason, each one of our teas is tested for pesticide residues by an independent laboratory, the results of which can be found here. Some of our teas are also tested for specific nutritional compounds, in which case the test results are also published here.
