The renowned mountain tea Sideritis scardica is endemic to the mountains of the Balkan Peninsula, including Bulgaria, Greece and Albania. Depending on terroir and its altitude, the plant develops distinct compositions, flavours and aromas.
Bulgaria’s most famous mountain tea, Mursalski tea, comes from the Rhodope Mountains above the mountain village of Trigrad (home to just 640 inhabitants) and Mugla, in the Mursalitsa region in the far south of Bulgaria, right on the border with Greece. In Bulgaria, the plant is listed as endangered and appears on the national Red List; it may only be harvested under strict guidelines.
Our authentic Mursalski tea grows in its natural habitat at around 1,800 metres above sea level (cultivation begins at approximately 1,500 metres), in an exceptional location. Only native seeds from the local wild mountain tea are sown on the alpine meadows. The plants are left to grow entirely on their own, untouched by cultivation, shaped solely by the pristine and breathtaking natural surroundings.
During the flowering period in July and August, the tea is carefully harvested by hand using traditional sickles, at the moment when the plants contain their highest levels of polyphenols. Only the upper, tender stems and the full flowering heads are gently selected. They are then air-dried in the shade, hanging naturally, before being packed for us. It simply doesn’t get more natural, or more premium, than this.
