Organic Genmaicha Powder Ohira

Character

Tasting Notes

This tea is a standout for anyone who loves the classic combination of green tea and roasted rice: organic Genmaicha from Shizuoka, finely milled into a powder for effortless preparation. It strikes a beautifully balanced profile, bringing together the full-bodied depth of green tea with the unmistakably warm, toasty notes of roasted genmai rice.

In Japan, Genmaicha is traditionally enjoyed with meals, and this powder is perfectly suited to accompany both savoury and sweet dishes. It also makes an excellent base for a Genmaicha latte – similar to a Matcha latte, but with a gently roasted, nutty twist that pairs wonderfully with the creamy richness of (plant-based) milk.

Equally refreshing served cold, simply shaken into a bottle of water, this Genmaicha powder offers a refreshing, mineral-rich drink.

Organic Genmaicha Powder Ohira

Genmaicha Powder

Genmaicha is a mild, low-caffeine Japanese green tea blended with roasted brown rice. It is typically made using Bancha as its base, while premium-grade varieties may feature high-quality Sencha. The rice is first roasted, then popped, and finally combined with the tea, giving Genmaicha its distinctive, savoury-malty character. Due to the roasted rice, Genmaicha is both warming and gentle, making it an ideal companion to meals and especially enjoyable on colder days.

Cultivation & Processing

Special features in location, cultivation & processing

The tea comes from Ryōgouchi in Ohira, located upstream along the Okitsugawa River, which is an area known in Japan as “the hidden village of fine green teas”. The tea fields are set within unspoilt nature, on steep mountain slopes characterised by wide fluctuations between day and night temperatures, abundant fresh spring water, and frequent mist. The fertile, reddish mountain soil lends the tea its vitality and rich mineral content, while bringing out the classic highland character of Shizuoka. Due to the steep terrain, harvesting is carried out meticulously using hand-guided machinery, as larger equipment cannot be used on the slopes.

The roasted rice is organically grown and is carefully selected by the farmer to complement the tea for each harvest.

Preparation

Stir approx. 1/2 teaspoon into 100–300ml of water at around 80°C.

For a cold brew, mix 1 slightly heaped teaspoon with 500 ml of cold water (ideally in a bottle with a sealable lid), then stir or shake well.

Packaging & Storage

Packed on site by us in airtight, flavour-protecting pouches with a resealable zip and stand-up base. A special nine-layer coating optimally protects the tea from oxidation and external contaminants.

When resealing, press out as much air as possible to keep the tea fresh. Alternatively, and especially for longer-term storage, we recommend our stylish, airtight tea caddies.
