The small, remote Pacific island of Tokunoshima lies just north of Okinawa in the Amami archipelago, one of Japan’s southernmost regions. Much of this volcanic island forms part of the beautiful Amami Guntō Quasi-National Park and is characterised by its exceptionally rich flora and fauna.
Tokunoshima is a popular destination for visitors thanks to its natural beauty, Caribbean-blue sea, and stunning beaches. The climate is humid subtropical with high levels of rainfall, while the sunshine duration is among the highest in all of Japan. This makes it an ideal home for demanding tea cultivars such as Benifuuki and Sunrouge, encouraging the plants to develop particularly high levels of polyphenols and bitter compounds.
