Special features in location, cultivation and processing
The tea fields for this tea lie among the picturesque rolling hills of Okabe, in the southern foothills of central Shizuoka. Shizuoka has long been considered one of the heartlands of Japanese tea cultivation, and since the Edo period, teas from the region have rightly been celebrated as “Tenka-ichi” – “the finest under heaven”. From the excellent drainage and mist- and water-rich climate to the exceptionally mineral-rich soils, nourished over centuries by the mighty Mount Fuji, the conditions here are ideal for cultivating tea of outstanding quality.
The Asahina sub-terroir in particular is renowned far beyond the borders of Shizuoka as one of Japan’s three traditional growing regions for authentic, top-grade Gyokuro. While in many other tea-growing regions even briefly shaded teas may sometimes be labelled and sold as “Gyokuro”, Asahina maintains particularly stringent standards, especially when it comes to shading, before a tea may be sold under the Gyokuro name.
