Tea Farm

Ota Shigeki Seicha (太田重喜製茶) is a fifth-generation family-run tea producer specialising in Tamaryokucha and Kamairicha, based in the renowned Ureshino region. The tea has been grown according to organic guidelines since 1977. Shigeki Ota carefully selects rare seed varieties from the diverse plots of his tea fields to create masterful blends and exceptional single-cultivar teas, often from uncommon and highly prized cultivars.

Tasting Notes

A wonderfully smooth and charming Wakocha black tea that gently delights the palate. Free from harsh edges, it presents a playful floral character reminiscent of an early summer meadow in bloom. After a short while, lovely aromatic notes of hawthorn berries and honeysuckle begin to emerge, never overpowering but gently revealing themselves. Light, airy, and gently floral with a hint of berry sweetness, this easy-drinking tea made from the rare Okumusashi cultivar invites you to pause and linger for a while, tempting you to brew infusion after infusion.

Wakocha

Wakocha (和紅茶) is the name given to black teas from Japan. Despite being an important commodity until the second half of the 20th century, increasing competition from India and China meant that black tea in Japan was relegated to a shadowy existence for a long time, with a return to this heritage only taking place in the last two decades. Despite its distinctive character, Wakocha usually has a mild taste for black tea, with fruity and floral notes and a pleasant honey sweetness, which is why they are often drunk without milk or sugar. In addition to Shizuoka Prefecture, a lot of very high-quality wakocha is produced on the main southern island of Kyushu.

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements. Likewise, the regions of Japan from which we source our teas are tested for radioactivity for every harvest.

Cultivation & Processing

Ureshino

The Ureshino growing region benefits from exceptionally fertile volcanic soil. Mr Shigeki Ota’s tea fields are nestled in the pristine natural surroundings, spread across 15 tea gardens located at elevations ranging from 150 to 500 metres above sea level. The fields have been completely pesticide- and herbicide-free since 1978. Since then, the family has developed its own natural protection methods, using ingredients such as sugar, wood ash, and vinegar. Fertilisers are applied only when absolutely necessary.

Preparation

3 heaped tsp (7g), 70 °C, 100–300 ml, steep for 2 minutes for a delightfully balanced infusion.

Alternatively, we recommend the classic preparation method for Wakocha at 90–95°C with a shorter steeping time of approx. 30–40 seconds.

For subsequent infusions, the temperature can then remain the same, while the steeping time should be reduced by a few seconds. We recommend up to 5 infusions for this tea.

Packaging & Storage

Packaged directly for us on site in a high quality, airtight, resealable standing zipper pouch with 9 protective layers to preserve flavour and protect against oxidation and contamination. When closing the bag, press out as much air as possible to best preserve the quality of the tea. Alternatively, and especially for longer-term storage, we recommend our stylish and airtight tea caddies.

Recommended Tea Pot

Despite its Japanese origin, we recommend using the Chinese Gongfu style for preparing this tea to bring out its particularly aromatic flavour. We recommend using either a Chinese teapot made of Yixing or Nixing clay, or alternatively, a classic Gaiwan made from taste-neutral porcelain.

An especially visually appealing choice is a glass teapot, as it allows you to watch the tea as it steeps. Another great option is a black Tokoname Kyusu.

Test results

Test results We find it very important that our teas are pure and produced in a way that respects the environment. For this reason, each one of our teas is tested for pesticide residues by an independent laboratory, the results of which can be found here.
