The Subtropical Island of Tanegashima
The picturesque island of Tanegashima, with its gently rolling hills, lies in the sea to the south of the mainland of Kagoshima Prefecture. The southern part of the island, which faces the Pacific Ocean to the east and Yakushima to the west, is characterised by a mild climate: the average annual temperature is around 19 °C, and annual rainfall exceeds 3,000 millimetres. At the same time, the island is known for its challenging natural conditions, with powerful typhoons in summer and biting north-westerly winds in winter.
Growing on hardy tea plants under these conditions, the tea leaves absorb abundant tropical sunlight, developing into particularly robust, nutrient-rich leaves of high quality.
Organic Cultivation
Only fermented fertiliser is used in the tea fields, made from organic matter that naturally decomposes and is reintegrated into the soil. By avoiding chemical fertilisers and synthetic pesticides entirely, the microorganisms within the fertiliser are free to thrive. This allows the soil to develop naturally into a loose, nutrient-rich foundation without the need for mechanical cultivation.
The result is fertile soil that continually renews itself, while weeds are carefully removed by hand.
