Japanese Oolong Tea

Japanese Oolongs are a true rarity and exceptionally hard to come by. Only a handful of tea farmers in Japan devote themselves to this style – a style native to China and Taiwan, where it enjoys far greater popularity. In Japan, demand remains limited, particularly given the painstaking and highly labour-intensive production process required. For discerning tea lovers in search of something truly unique, Japanese Oolongs hold a special allure, which is why we are especially proud to have them in our collection.

Miyazaki Sabo Oolongs

Organic pioneer Miyazaki Sabo is one of Japan’s most skilled tea farmers, particularly when it comes to tea varieties beyond the traditional steamed green teas like sencha. His oolongs are bursting with flavour and vibrant floral aromas. Especially impressive is the wide range of cultivars he grows – he is virtually the only producer of rare varieties such as Minamisayaka and Takachiho. Many of Miyazaki Sabo’s teas have received prestigious awards, including our Minamisayaka oolong, which won the Platinum Award at the Nihoncha Awards 2021.

Oolong from Yamazoe, Nara

An outstanding gourmet Oolong from Japan that uniquely bridges the Chinese-Taiwanese Oolong tradition with a distinctly Japanese character. It shows clear parallels to fine Chinese teas such as the famous mineral-rich Yancha Rock Oolongs. Meticulously crafted using an authentic Taiwanese Kamairi roasting drum and finished with sun-drying, this tea is naturally grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilisers.

Benifuuki Oolong

The Benifuuki cultivar is especially renowned for its high concentration of methylated catechins. When crafted as an Oolong, it reveals a uniquely floral bouquet. The slightly coarser leaves of the third harvest are particularly rich in valuable saponins – a unique quality that becomes apparent from the very first infusion. This tea is grown on the southern Pacific island of Tokunoshima, cultivated entirely without the use of pesticides.
