Purple Tea

Purple tea is believed to have been first discovered in Yunnan, China. The violet leaves, coloured that way due to their anthocyanin content, are said to have caught the attention of the local tea farmers. In order to cultivate this tea in the (climatically) optimally situated tea fields of Kenya, the Kenyan Tea Research Institute conducted an over 20-year-long research project to find a suitable cultivar – a project which finally culminated in 2011 with the cultivar "TRFK306". Today, this cultivar is grown in a number of plantations in the Mount Kenya region and has become a significant economic factor for the Kenyan tea industry. Anthocyanins are found in many plants besides purple teas: these pigment compounds are largely responsible for the colour of many blue and purple fruits such as blueberries as well as vegetables such as red cabbage. A special feature in their molecular structure allows their colour to vary with the surrounding pH value. The addition of lemon juice, for example, produces a bright pink colour in the infusion.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

About Yoshi En.

Cultivation & Processing

Due to the elevation of the tea fields and the natural climatic conditions, no pesticides are needed. The fields receive plenty of direct sunlight, which contributes to the production of anthocyanins in the leaves.

Single Origin

This tea is exclusively sourced from the above mentioned tea farm at Mt Kenya.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

2 heaped tsp per 100-300ml (80°C) water. Steep for 2-3 minutes. Suitable for several infusions.

Packaging

High quality, airtight, resealable standing zipper pouch with 9 protective layers to preserve flavour and protect against oxidation and contamination.

Recommended Teapot

For an especially aromatic and traditional-tasting Kenyan tea, we recommend an elegant glass teapot from Hario or alternatively a classic porcelain gaiwan.

Recommended Storage

Ideally store in a quality tea caddy made from cherry tree bark (wooden, kabazaiku chazutsu) or an airtight, double-coated metal tin.
