Tea Farm

Phuguri Estate

Nestled in the Mirik Valley at the foothills of the Himalayas, the picturesque Phuguri Tea Estate in Darjeeling, India, was founded in 1880 and sprawls over 432 hectare at altitudes of 1100m to 1800m, positioning it as one of the highest and most prolific gardens in the region. Globally renowned for its first flush "Tippy Clonal" Darjeeling, the distinctly robust flavour and heavenly aroma of Phuguri teas are a result of the ample rainfall and cooler microclimate of its northeast-facing slopes. As one of the 87 certified tea gardens producing Darjeeling tea protected by a Geographical Indication, authenticity and quality is guaranteed. This is further reinforced by organic, HACCP, Rainforest Alliance and Ethical Tea Partnership certifications emphasising their dedication to ecological and ethical tea production.

Character

Flavour

The aroma profile of this entry-level first flush Spring Darjeeling is typical of the genre: floral with a hint of mango and fresh herbal notes of parsley and cut grass. In terms of taste, it is very sweet with only a slight astringency, making it an extremely drinkable, everyday black tea.

Leaf

Super Finest Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe One (SFTGFOP1): highest quality whole leaves with plenty of tips/buds.

Black Tea

The most oxidised and globally consumed tea, black tea, like all teas, is made from Camellia sinensis. In contrast to green tea, the leaves are not heated/fixed after withering to prevent further oxidation. Instead they are vigorously rolled to break down the cellular structure and release the enzymes responsible for oxidation. These enzymes then react with oxygen in the air to form dark-coloured compounds called flavonoids, resulting in the leaves changing colour from green to black and developing their flavour and aroma. Black tea originates from China, where it is called Hong Cha, literally "red tea", after the glowing red-orange colour of the brew. The flavour of black teas vary considerably from light, sweet and fruity to strong, malty and smoky, depending on where they are grown and the level of oxidation they undergo.

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Cultivation & Processing

Orthodox

This tea is processed in the orthodox manner typically used to create high quality loose leaf black tea. After the tender first two leaves and buds are diligently handpicked in the morning before the sun becomes too strong, they are withered indoors for up to 24 hours to allow moisture in the leaves to evaporate. The withered leaves are then mechanically rolled (despite higher running costs) using old types of machinery to better preserve the characteristic aroma of Phuguri Darjeeling, and are left to oxidise under constant supervision to obtain the optimal bouquet. Finally the tea is oven dried and packed into tea chests by hand.

Single Origin

This tea is sourced directly from one tea estate in Mirik, Darjeeling, India.
