Cancer Bush

Farm

The farm is located in a remote, desert-like landscape at the foot of the Cederberg Mountains. The valley is sparsely populated and accessible only via a long gravel road. The area is surrounded by mountains in a horseshoe shape, providing the plants with a distinctive and stimulating microclimate.

Cancer Bush

Cancer Bush

Cancer Bush is a perennial, herbaceous to shrubby plant belonging to the legume family (Fabaceae), and is predominantly native to South Africa. It typically grows to a height of 0.5 to 1.5 metres and is characterised by its fine, feathered, silvery-green leaves, which give it a delicate appearance. Striking scarlet, butterfly-shaped flowers appear mainly during the warmer months, providing an important nectar source for many insects. After flowering, the plant produces distinctive, inflated, papery seed pods, which is a typical feature of its genus. Botanically, the Cancer Bush is notable for its remarkable ability to adapt to dry, nutrient-poor soils, as well as for its symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia. Because of its secondary plant compounds such as flavonoids and triterpenoids, it is also valued in traditional South African medicine.
