Organic Yunnan Bai Mu Dan Earl Grey

Character

Tasting Notes

A refreshing new interpretation of Earl Grey which is usually made with black tea. For this variation we selected high-quality highland white tea from Yunnan as well as original Italian bergamot oil. The white tea's exceptionally buttery vanilla and mild fruit notes of peach perfectly pair with the citrus aroma of bergamot oil. The result is a finely composed White Earl Grey of the finest quality.

An exciting reinterpretation of the classic Earl Grey, traditionally based on black tea. For this variation, we’ve paired high-quality, high-altitude white tea from Yunnan with authentic organic Italian bergamot oil. The tea’s buttery vanilla and gently fruity peach notes are beautifully complemented by the refined citrus fragrance of bergamot. The result is a wonderfully smooth, delicately aromatic Earl Grey of the highest calibre.

White Tea

White tea is generally made from specific cultivars and is the least processed tea (Camellia sinensis), with the lowest level of oxidation. Due to its minimal yet highly demanding production process, which involves pre-drying and air withering, it retains a high concentration of natural tea compounds. High-quality white teas are characterised by a high proportion of aromatic leaf buds and a light infusion colour. In terms of flavour, white tea stands out for its refined elegance and delicate sweetness, often featuring notes of vanilla and a smooth, velvety mouthfeel.

Yoshien Labortests

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements.

Cultivation & Processing

Special features in location, cultivation and processing

Yunnan’s highlands enjoy a generally mild, subtropical climate, even at higher altitudes. This is due to the predominantly south-facing slopes, which are strongly influenced by weather systems from both the Indian Ocean and the Pacific.

The tea garden itself is set within a beautiful mountainous landscape. At over 1,800 metres above sea level, exceptionally high elevation allows the tea to grow slowly and develop an especially aromatic character. Leaf-loving insects are unable to reach such altitudes, enabling the farmers to completely avoid the use of pesticides. The result is a particularly natural, untreated organic tea with outstanding flavour and aroma.

The buds and leaves are carefully hand-selected, all from the precious first harvest of the year. After picking, the leaves undergo an intensive withering process which can last up to three days due to the high altitude. At 1,800 metres the air is noticeably thinner, meaning the leaves oxidise very slowly. This creates a remarkably delicate flavour profile, reminiscent of what is otherwise found only in expensive highland Darjeeling teas.
