Chawan - Matcha Bowls

Each Chawan is handcrafted and sourced from historic ceramic centres across Japan, showcasing a wide range of traditional shapes and regional styles.
Kyo-yaki
Discover a wide range of Matchawan from Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, in a variety of classic shapes, glazes and seasonal handpainted motifs – a hallmark of Kyo-yaki, particularly from the area around Kiyomizu temple, and as such are also known as Kiyomizu-yaki.
Mino-yaki
Produced in the historic Mino province, now Gifu prefecture, Mino-yaki boasts a rich ceramic history dating back to the 11th century. These Mino ware bowls in a variety of traditional shapes are perfect for everyday use and newcomers to Matcha.
Raku-yaki
Celebrated tea master Sen no Rikyu's Chawan of choice, Raku bowls are hand-moulded and fired at low temperatures, resulting in a very soft and porous clay with a wonderfully warm, tactile quality. Raku wares typically come in black or red to bring out the bright green of Matcha most clearly.
Asahi-yaki
The Asahi kiln in Uji: the Matcha capital of Japan, has been handcrafting Chawan for 400 years, counting samurai through to the reigning Imperial Family as loyal clients. Their signature glazes include the classic "red deer back" Benikase and the more recent sky blue Geppaku.
