Tea Farm

Nuruki Seicha

The fields of Nuruki Seicha lie in the shadow of Mount Kaimon (Japanese: 開聞岳), in southern Chiran and not far from the Sakurajima volcano. For over 20 years, the Nuruki family has been cultivating tea here using organic and holistic farming methods, and has become one of the most highly regarded organic farms in Japan. Now in its third generation, the farm is led by Yuichiro Nuruki. The transition to organic farming was initially a major challenge: In the late 1990s, Chiran was still entirely dominated by conventional agriculture. The family had no prior experience to draw upon, and their bold decision to forgo pesticides altogether was met with scepticism. However, Mr Nuruki’s father remained undeterred, and today the Nuruki Tea Factory proudly produces teas of top quality, rich in flavour and nutrients.

Bio-Farm in Miyazaki

For this tea farm located in picturesque Miyazaki, their firm commitment to and belief in safe and pure teas drove them to successfully transition to an organic cultivation method that works in harmony with nature. In the early years, they faced severe insect infestations and disease outbreaks among the tea plants. It took several years and a great deal of creativity to finally find a way to cultivate healthy, resilient plants without causing environmental harm. This passion is beautifully reflected in the farm’s robust, flavourful teas.

Hojicha Kagoshima Organic

Character

Flavour

By blending southern tea cultivars known for their rich umami, partially shading the plants before harvest, and selecting a high-quality second flush (nibancha) with a low stem content, this premium Hojicha achieves a beautifully balanced, full-bodied character. The roast is notably bold, resulting in a deep, dark brown colour. Overall, it’s a robust Hojicha with an elegant bitterness and a rich, toasty aroma.

Leaf

Relatively fine, small leaves; very little stem content

Cup

Dark reddish orange

Hojicha Kagoshima Organic

Hojicha

Hojicha's fine needles are gently roasted in special Hojicha roasters after being processed into Sencha or Bancha, whereby they develop malty sweet aromas and even caramel notes. Unlike most other Hojicha teas on the market, we only use absolute top quality and 1st harvests, a difference that has an extremely positive effect on both taste and nutritional content. Due to its mild flavour profile, Hojicha is also extremely popular in Japan, particularly during the winter holidays and after sumptuous meals and feasts.

Yoshien Labortests

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements. Likewise, all the regions of Japan from which we source our teas are tested for radioactivity for every harvest.

About Yoshi En.

Cultivation & Processing

The renowned tea-growing region of Chiran lies in Kagoshima, the southernmost part of Japan. Situated on flat land near the sea, it enjoys exceptionally high levels of sunshine throughout the year. The tea fields here have been certified organic since 1998, and the farmer uses a homemade, fully natural fertiliser, matured and fermented over three years. This blend includes bamboo powder and mineral-rich rock, among other organic materials. The volcanic soil is particularly fertile, further enriched by frequent ash fall from the active volcano, Mt. Sakurajima. To protect the delicate leaves from the intense sun, the tea plants are shaded for around seven days before harvest. After picking, the leaves are carefully washed to remove any volcanic ash. The farmer takes great pride in using traditional rolling and drying machines, which are fitted with bamboo components instead of plastic.

The Miyazaki Prefecture is blessed with abundant natural beauty, featuring lush green mountains and a beautiful coastline. With the second-highest number of sunny days and an average annual temperature of approximately 17.4°C (making it the third warmest region in Japan) Miyazaki provides ideal conditions for productive, high-quality tea cultivation. Beyond its natural features, Miyazaki also holds deep cultural and mythological significance. According to Shintō beliefs, the most revered deity, the sun goddess Amaterasu, is said to have once hidden in the Amano Iwato cave. This event is still honoured today with festivals held in the Shintō shrines of Miyazaki.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

2 heaped tsp per 200-300ml (60°C) water. Steep for 2 minutes.

Packaging & Storage

Packed in an especially high-quality, airtight flavour-protecting pouch with zipper and stand-up base. A 9-layer coating provides maximum protection against contaminants. When closing the pouch, as much air as possible should be pressed out to keep the tea well protected. Alternatively, and particularly for longer-term storage, we recommend our stylish and airtight tea caddies.

Recommended Teapot

The ideal teapot for this hojicha is a brown kyusu or dobin for hojicha (which allows it to develop a more full-bodied flavour). For a more neutral taste, a black tokoname kyusu with a fine ceramic sieve can be used.

Test results

We find it very important that our teas are pure and produced in a way that respects the environment. For this reason, each one of our teas is tested for pesticide residues by an independent laboratory, the results of which can be found here. Some of our teas are also tested for specific nutritional compounds, in which case the test results are also published here.
