Japanese Black Teas

Both the Benifuuki wakocha, celebrated for its intense floral character, and the rare and fruity Izumi wakocha, sourced from the finest growing region in Ashikita, Kumamoto, have won the highest awards in Japan, including the Nihoncha Award and the Kyushu Wakocha Contest. Please note that availability of these exceptional teas is highly limited – particularly the prized Izumi varieties.

Gourmet wakocha sourced directly from a multi-award-winning tea garden in the mountainous Yame region in Fukuoka, famed for its fine Japanese black teas. The Yabukita wakocha has a wonderful floral bouquet with notes of plum blossom and peach, while the Benifuuki wakocha has a seductive fragrance reminiscent of fine perfume, with fine whiskey notes and a subtle fruity sweetness.

Endemic to Kyushu, the ancient Zairai cultivar's exact origins are unknown. Miyazaki Sabou's tea plants in Gokase are almost 100 years old, which, in combination with his particularly natural cultivation methods, results in a remarkably clear and potent black tea with beautiful notes of malt and raw cocoa.

The picturesque town of Ureshino is not only well-known for its onsen (hot springs), but also its long-standing tradition of producing tea varieties such as Kamairicha, Tamaryokucha, and Wakocha black tea. Today, these are beloved as niche favourites among connoisseurs, enriching the Japanese tea scene. Ranging from malty-tart undertones to floral-sweet aromas, the Wakocha teas from our long-standing partner farmer Ōta Shigeki offer a rich, multifaceted black tea experience.
