Character

Tasting Notes

A top-quality Genmaicha tea crafted from pure first-harvest Sencha and premium Ise Hikari rice, which is fuller and sweeter than conventional rice. The fine needles have a deep, dark green colour, brewing into a vibrant yellow-green hue typical of high-quality Sencha. The result is an exceptionally complex, full-bodied flavour with nutty nuances reminiscent of fine nougat. The warm, refined aromas of the roasted rice lend the tea a well-rounded profile. Produced exclusively for us.

Genmaicha

Genmaicha is a mild, low-caffeine Japanese green tea blended with roasted brown rice. Bancha is most commonly used as the green tea base for Genmaicha, while premium qualities may use high-grade Sencha. The rice is first roasted, then popped, and finally blended with the tea, giving it a pleasantly savoury, malty flavour. The roasted rice lends Genmaicha a warming, gentle quality, making it particularly well-suited as an accompaniment to meals and for colder days.

Yoshien Labortests

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements. Likewise, all the regions of Japan from which we source our teas are tested for radioactivity for every harvest.

Cultivation & Processing

Special features in location, cultivation & processing

The tea garden sits high in the prime Honyama terroir above the famous Shizuoka River, surrounded and sheltered by dense forests. Its southern exposure and steep terrain ensure abundant sunlight, while the elevation and pronounced morning and evening mists create an ideal microclimate that enhances the tea’s quality.

Single Origin

This tea comes 100% from the above-mentioned tea fields in Honyama, sourced directly from the tea farmer.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

2 heaped teaspoons per 100–300ml water, 60°C, steep for 2 minutes. Suitable for multiple infusions.

For a more pronounced roasted flavour, infuse at 80–85°C for 1–2 minutes.

Packaging & Storage

Packaged in an especially high-quality, airtight, flavour-protecting pouch with zipper and stand-up base. Its special nine-layer coating ensures maximum protection against oxidation and contamination. Alternatively, and especially for longer-term storage, we recommend our stylish and airtight tea caddies.

Recommended Teapot

Ideal for this tea is a special brown Kyusu or a Dobin (which brings out its distinctive body particularly well), or alternatively, a black Tokoname Kyusu with a fine ceramic filter (more neutral in character).

Test results

We find it very important that our teas are pure and produced in a way that respects the environment. For this reason, each one of our teas is tested for pesticide residues by an independent laboratory, the results of which can be found here. Some of our teas are also tested for specific nutritional compounds, in which case the test results are also published here.
