Character

Tasting Notes

The high quality of this Meban Bancha is evident in its thin, elegant needles, which resemble a fine Sencha more than a typical Bancha. The rice has a dark, lovely toasted colour and is made from the ise hikari variety, which is sweeter and more nourishing than generic rice. The result is a classic, creamy, balanced and uplifting premium Genmaicha. Produced exclusively for us.

Leaf

Strong, grass-green needles; vibrant orange-red toasted rice

Genmaicha

Genmaicha is a mild, low-caffeine Japanese green tea with roasted brown rice. The green tea used for Genmaicha is typically Bancha, with premium qualities also using high-quality Sencha. The added rice is roasted, popped and then mixed into the tea, giving it a hearty, malty taste. The added rice makes Genmaicha a warming and very mild tea, making it particularly suitable as an accompaniment to meals and for cold days.

Yoshien Labortests

Laboratory Tests

We go to great lengths to identify the finest organic tea farms across the world’s most celebrated terroirs. All our teas are sourced directly from the farmer and, with a few exceptions, are certified organic or come from pesticide-free farms. Each batch of tea for every harvest is tested for pesticides and other pollutants in an independent German lab to ensure they meet our strict quality standards as well as HACCP food safety requirements. Likewise, all the regions of Japan from which we source our teas are tested for radioactivity for every harvest.

Cultivation & Processing

Special features in location, cultivation & processing

The tea field is perched high up above the Shizuoka River in Honyama, surrounded and protected by dense forests. The steep, southern-facing slopes receive copious sunlight and are shrouded in morning and evening fog that provide an ideal bracing climate for the growth of the tea plants.

Single Origin

This tea comes 100% from the above-mentioned tea field in Honyama, sourced directly from the tea farmer.

Preparation

Brewing Guide

2 heaped tsp per 100-300ml (60°C) water. Steep for 2 minutes. Suitable for several infusions.

For a more intense roasted flavour, the tea can also be infused with water at 80–85°C for 1–2 minutes.

Packaging

High quality, airtight, resealable standing zipper pouch with 9 protective layers to preserve flavour and protect against oxidation and contamination.

Recommended Teapot

The ideal teapot for this Genmaicha is a brown Kyusu or a Dobin for Genmaicha (which allows it to develop a more full-bodied flavour). For a more neutral taste, a black Tokoname Kyusu with a fine ceramic strainer can be used.

Recommended Storage

The ideal tea caddy for this tea is one made from high-quality cherry wood (Kabazaiku Chazutsu; solid wood) or, alternatively, a more affordable airtight, double-coated tea caddy.
